REMI + JANE

Two designers with a diverse skill-set and the intuitive vision of one

An insight into the collaborative projects between Dutch designer Remi van Oers and UK born designer Jane Worthington.

‘’When we talk to each other it’s like having a conversation with yourself, but then getting an answer you did not expect!‘’

We are two very principled designers, which is already quite a big thing, add to that the fact we are very critical then you know ‘’this will do’’, will never do! Our biggest challenge is always to convince ourselves.

‘’If we both want to have it, then we know were on the right track.’’

We look for the tension found between industrial design and humanity, it is our aim to take the industrial out of industrial design. We call it soft-minimalism, and believe us, it takes a lot of time to make something simple. We design to last, we aim for our designs to last for a lifetime in fact, because durability is the ultimate form of sustainability. We take this pursuit for perfection pretty seriously, that’s a fact, but we do it with a lot of jokes and laughter that seems to be an integral part of our design process. We love what we do, it’s a vibe that is so strong and we want that to be visible in what we do. Our day starts with coffee, nothing unusual, that’s correct. But for us this can last 2 to 3 hours! These talks are very important because it’s during them that we define the context of what we want to do! We do this by filtering and filtering until we have stripped our idea of everything that has no relevance and only the essence is left. Trusting one another and being totally honest with each other is where our answers lie.

‘’We wake up in the morning excited to pick up where we stopped the day before.’’

Our conviction is to stay true to ourselves. You will never see us posing as rock stars, our work stands where we don’t need to! We stay who we are, and our vision did not change because of a crisis. We already believed in what we do!

Our collaboration started one year ago when were approached by a well-known Danish brand, 12 months later we have several things in the pipeline with leading international brands. How did these collaborations come about? Well, we believe it’s a vibe, an understanding. Some companies look and listen and it’s hard to articulate, but they just know, there is an unspoken mind-set, approach and style that binds you.

We are working hard at the studio and with our bachelor students at the academy too. We are calm, positive and also excited to be able to show you the first results of our collaborations together with these leading brands soon.

Remi wrote a guest article for ‘rivista milanese’: Olio Officina, OOF. As a friend of the magazine Remi had previously written for the online version of OOF. This time the Italian magazine reached out to Remi to write for Number 8 of the international printed edition, which focussed on ‘olio d'oliva’, olive oil. In the eight page long guest article Remi informally taps in on the broader sense of design, the Milan design week 2019, and the work of female designer and former fellow Design Academy Eindhoven student Sabine Marcelis.

OOF 8, the quarterly magazine, is published in both English and Italian, and available for purchase worldwide on their website.

Winning the Red Dot Design Award

red dot award winner

Red Dot Award.jpg

Dreaming to one day -before retiring- winning a Red Dot Design Award would have be a cherry on the cake. Winning this award now for designing the Carving Balance for Carving Fitness, which we worked on very hard for the last two years, really feels rewarding!

Statement by the jury:
“The Carving Balance strikes a convincing balance between elegant design and functionality and thus enhances the pleasure of working out.”

The Red Dot Organisation gave us a letter with overwhelming numbers ready to use in an impressive press release, stating with the fact that we are one of the successful winners out of 4928 entries from 56 countries, while being judged by a 38-member jury of international experts who awarded us with a Red Dot Award for high design quality.

This could easily be used to make a great impression of course, but I am prouder stating that we created this great product with a really small and dedicated team, with the core participants countable on one hand. Proud to say that our goal was not to win an award but to create the best possible fitness product we can today. I am proud to see that taking design seriously, believing in innovation and working with a good collaboration actually does reap its reward. For this I am proud!

I want to thank the people involved in this journey so far, from engineering, to manufacturing, to web development. I want to thank Twan Kuijpers, founder of Carving Fitness in particular for believing in this designer with his ideas of renewal. Hard work pays off doesn’t it?

Way too early to retire though, so up to the next award!
